First Euro Drive Of 2011 Grand Cherokee Diesel

The Journos at Autoblog.com have just driven the new Turbo Diesel Grand Cherokee in Europe.
Some of their comments -
"On the road, the Italian 3.0-liter V6 CRD in the Grand Cherokee Laredo 4x4 from the Jefferson North plant in Detroit is as smooth as butter."
and
" The 237 horsepower (177kw) is, of course, fine. But it's the 406 pound-feet of torque (550nm) between 1,800 and 2,800 rpm that gets our juices flowing."
and
"For one thing, the 3.0 CRD can accelerate a Grand Cherokee 4x4 to 60 mph (100 kmh) in just 8.0 seconds, which is darned close to the estimated time for the 5.7-liter V8."
" It also has the same 7,700-plus pound (3,500 KG) towing capacity."
 and
"And, as we've already stated, this powertrain is hugely refined. Having a 1:1 fourth gear and 0.83:1 fifth gear with the five-speed W5A580 automatic and 3.07:1 final drive ratio might seem lazy, but this gearbox is about ideal for those wanting to cruise America's highways. Besides, the engine's redline is at just 4,600 rpm and 85-mph (135 kmh) cruising (face it, you do it regularly) hangs around 1,500 rpm. That's quiet, folks, and the second-generation JTDm diesel management from Fiat Powertrain creates greater efficiencies while also hushing things even more so."

Jeep Revise Tow Ratings For 2011 Grand Cherokee

Due to a production restriction in the USA, Chrysler Australia have had to down grade Limited 5.7L Hemi V8 models to 2268 KG. The availability of the Heavy Duty Cooling (NMC) and the Trailer Tow Prep Group (AHC) has caused the change due to shortages of components for export models. The Overland and Diesel models will not be effected and will still come with NMC and AHC.
This is a concern for the many buyers who have already ordered vehicles expecting to have the 3,500 KG rating at time of placing their order. The changes effect vehicles built from February/March production which means these vehicles are already built and on the water.

Buyers effected should contact their dealer and confirm if their new Jeep has the NMC and AHC groups fitted as the ability to tow loads heavier than 2268 KG is a real legal and insurance concern.

Wrangler Rubicon Turbo Diesel - Sergio Gets Asked The Ultimate Question!

Chrysler LLC Boss Sergio Marchionni has been asked the wholly grail of Jeep questions.
'Will they build the Wrangler Turbo Diesel Rubicon?'

Autoblog are reporting that Sergio has confirmed that the US will get a Turbo Diesel Grand Cherokee by 2013, but when asked "But will the Wrangler get the European 2.8-liter CRD inline-four good for 197 hp and 302 lb-ft of torque, paired with the NSG370 six-speed manual and Rubicon Rock-Trac transfer case? Because that, folks, is the holy grail item. Even Sergio was mum on this."

2011 Grand Cherokee - Mopar Nudge Bar ............. Warning!

What a blunder Jeep Australia have made with the genuine Mopar Tubular Nudge Bar for the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee.
Who ever approved the design needs to be hung out to dry!
The Nudge Bar looks fine at first glance, but, have a good look at where it is mounted to the vehicle.

Jeep designers in the US have fitted serious, very heavy duty recovery hooks to the front of the new Grand Cherokee. Australian designers have designed approved and manufactured a great looking Nudge Bar and guess where it gets attached to the vehicle?

It gets fitted directly on to the recovery hooks rendering the vehicle un- recoverable if it needs to be recovered or be used to pull another vehicle from the front. If you tried to use a snatch strap or tow strap you would severely damage the nudge bar or damage the recovery strap. There is nowhere else to safely attach your recovery strap.
So be warned! If you are buying the new Grand Cherokee and intend to go four wheel driving, dont fit the genuine Mopar Nudge Bar or remove it before you go bush, which kinda defeats the purpose of it in the first place doesn't it!

Jeep Grand Cherokee 2011 Wins '10 Best Interiors' Award

The 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee has been named by Wards.com as one of the 10 Best Interiors'  for 2011. The new Jeep has won various awards around the world but this one is special as the Chrysler design teams have been concentrating on improving the quality and fit of it's interiors across the range. The Jeep grand Cherokee Overland was selected from 51 finalists along with the Dodge Charger. Chrysler was the only manufacturer to have 2 of its stable selected in the top 10.

“I’m happy that the team’s hard work is recognized, and to have the honor of winning two of Ward’s ‘10 Best Interiors’ illustrates how our cross-functional product teams are working together to deliver our customers the execution of the world’s best – at an attainable value,” said Klaus Busse, Chrysler’s Head of Interior Design. “And with their expressive cabins crafted in premium materials and world-class precision, the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee and Dodge Charger highlight just the beginning of where we are taking our interior designs.”

Chrysler Respond To Chinese Jeep Wrangler Concerns

Chinese Authorities have placed a distribution ban on the Jeep Wrangler due to concerns about some 2008 - 2010 vehicles catching fire.

Chrysler LLC have issued the following response:-
'Chrysler Group is cooperating fully with China’s General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine to identify and fix 2008-2010 model-year Jeep® Wrangler SUVs equipped with automatic transmissions and sold in China.
In February 2010, Chrysler issued a global recall to address a potential for transmission fluid to overheat and expel onto hot surfaces that could pose a fire hazard.
The conditions were linked to extreme and/or abusive driving conditions under rigorous off-road conditions.
Outside of China, Chrysler Group is not aware of any vehicle fires related to this condition once the recall was completed.
Chrysler Group is not aware of any injuries or accidents due to this condition.'
Australian vehicles are already subject to pre delivery inspection and recall.

Does This Mean Jeep Will Not Produce A Wrangler Pickup?

Moab Easter Safari has seen a great array of special Moparised Jeep Vehicles developed. But this one could be the death nell for all those Jeep Pickup enthusiasts who just want Jeep to build a JK Pickup.

Jeep have released a Mopar Kit to convert your Wrangler Unlimited into a pickup. Sounds like a great idea but! This likely means that all the hype about them manufacturing a Wrangler Pickup (Gladiator) is not not going to happen. If they have produced this mopar kit they are not likely to build it for the mass market!

Official Press Release - Taking cues from the popular Jeep Scrambler CJ-8 from the 1980's, Mopar has designed a kit for do-it-yourselfers that converts a Jeep Wrangler Unlimited into a pickup truck. The bed length is 50 inches and the width between wheel wells is 44 inches. The team created body panels to cover the second-row entrance and removed all of the interior parts behind the front seats-transforming the vehicle into a two-seater with just enough room for gear inside, and a pickup style bed to be used for outside cargo.

Jeep Turbo Diesel 2011 Grand Cherokee News (updated)!

Jeep have revealed its new Turbo Diesel V6 engine at the recent Geneva motor show, the all new 3.0-litre V6 turbo-diesel goes into the 2011 WK Grand Cherokee which has already been launched in Australia earlier this year with petrol V6 and V8 engines.

The new V6 CRD engine was co-developed with VM Motori and Fiat Powertrain and in the Jeep application delivers 177kW of power at 4000rpm and 550Nïm peak torque between 1800 and 2800rpm. This is 10 per cent more power and eight per cent more torque than the MB engine it replaces. Replacing the Mercedes-Benz TDV6 of the same capacity that was previously used in the WH Grand Cherokee and Chrysler 300C, the new engine will be available accross the new WK range including Laredo, Limited and Overland models. The new engine will also appear in the next Chrysler 300C due here early next year.

VM Motori have manufactured diesel engines for Chrysler for many years and their 2.8L Turbo Diesels are currently used in the current KK Cherokee, JK Wrangler and Chrysler Grand Voyager models.

Putting out vastly improved power and torque, and a huge 19 per cent improvement in fuel consumption to just 10.3 L/100 km on the urban cycle and 7.2 L/100 km on the extra-urban cycle. For the combined cycle, the fuel economy is rated at 8.3 L/100 km.  The new model engine will be very popular with buyers looking for the efficency and power of a diesel for towing and long distance touring in the Jeep Grand Cherokee

The engine is designed to run on EN590 ultra-low-sulfur diesel fuel.
For this engine, cast-iron exhaust manifolds are utilized. Additional emissions controls include a close-coupled diesel oxidation catalyst and standard diesel particulate filter. Euro 5 emissions are met through an exhaust-gas recirculation (EGR) system that includes an EGR valve with DC motor and a high-performance EGR cooler with bypass valve.

CO2 emissions are reduced to 270 g/km for the urban cycle and 188 g/km for the extra-urban cycle. Combined-cycle CO2 emissions are now 218 g/km.

These are the Euro ratings - Australian ratings are not yet published.

To achieve this efficiency the V6 uses Fiat’s MultiJet II common-rail fuel-injection technology with 1800-bar injection pressure and new injector nozzles that can inject up to eight times per cycle for more precise, efficient and quieter combustion. A single variable-geometry turbocharger is employed, as is intercooling and cooled exhaust gas recirculation, while an exhaust catalyst and diesel particulate filter are fitted in the exhaust system to further reduce emissions. This all-new compact and lightweight 60-degree ‘V’ engine uses a compacted graphite-iron cylinder block with alloy heads that comprise DOHC and four valves per cylinder. The rigid block features structural stiffening and a re-enforced cast oil pan to reduce noise and harshness from the combustion process. The forged-steel crankshaft is supported by four main bearing journals fitted with four-bolt caps incorporated into the bedplate to further improve rigidity and reduce noise.

Pricing is yet to be finalised but expect the diesel engine option to cost around the same as the Hemi V8, which costs $60,000 in Limited guise - the Laredo should be approximately $5000 more than the Laredo V6 petrol at $45,000. The new Diesel Grand Cherokee's should be arriving around June or July 2011.

Wanted - Serious Bull Bar For Jeep KK Cherokee / Liberty

The Jeep KK Cherokee (Liberty in US) has now been on the market since 2007 and now that many more are being used in real four wheel drive terrain, more owners are looking to make their Jeep KK more capable. Jeep have seen this demand after feedback from owners and have recently released a 2" Mopar suspension lift for the Australian market.
But there is only one Bull Bar on the market in Australia and that is the aluminium Bull Bar from East Coast Bull Bars. This bar is adapted from the KJ model that they manufacturer but it is not suitable for the fitting of an electric winch and is not really strong enough for large animal strike protection.

So a group of KK owners in Melbourne have started an email campaign to see if a demand can be created for Australia's leading bull Bar manufacturer ARB to build one. As the US market is much larger than Australia with many more KK models being sold there we need a world wide campaign from KK Liberty and Cherokee owners to show that there is a demand.  ARB say they have no immediate plans for a bull/winch bar for the KK due to “little global demand expressed”.  So us jeepers need to let them know there is demand for a KK Bull Bar.

If you own a KK Cherokee or Liberty and want to fit a serious Bull Bar and winch to your vehicle we need you to email sales@arb.com.au (for Australian owners) or sales@arbusa.com and cc sales@arb.com.au (For US owners) and expressing your interest in a ARB Bull Bar for the KK.

Jeep Sales Success Brings Australian Supply Problems

Huge month over month sales success in the USA is causing even more supply issues for Australian Jeep buyers. Sales of all Chrysler Jeep and Dodge models have been considerably higher than 1st Quarter 2010 and March 2010 with Jeep Grand Cherokee reporting a massive 64.1% increase over 2010 sales for March 2011.

Sales results for Q1 2011 were
  • Compass up 49.9%
  • Patriot up a wopping 73%
  • Wrangler up 18%
  • Liberty (KK Cherokee here) up 41%
  • Grand Cherokee a huge 64.1%
Along with supply shortages of the Pentastar 3.6L engine, paint supply restrictions, and a shortage of 2.8L Turbo Diesel engines Australian Buyers are having to wait for lengthy delivery times for Wrangler and Grand Cherokee vehicles.

Australian Jeep sales are up also and the demand for the new 2011 Grand Cherokee is already causing dealers to quote 4 months or longer delivery times for most models as nearly all vehicles in Australia or on the water are sold. Be prepared for a long wait on some of the more popular Jeeps, or grab a vehicle that is in stock if you can find one!
