WK2 Grand Cherokee AT Tyre Options
If you want to head into the great Australian bush in your Grand Cherokee the stock issue Highway Tyre (HT) is not going to give you adequate traction, durability or the reliability you will need in the bush. Whether you are heading out into the outback, crossing a desert, heading into the high country or just the local fire trails you are going to need tyres that will get you there and back with no surprises.
Before you go and buy a set of tyres for your Jeep you need to decide where you are going to do most of your driving and how often you will drive in four wheel drive terrain.
You also need to decide if you want to increase the ground clearance of your Jeep by increasing the profile and size of your tyres. Increasing the size of your tyres will be limited by your state regulations for roadworthiness and also clearance inside the fenders and brake and suspension components of your vehicle.
You also need to consider the wheel size of your Jeep. The Laredo is fitted with 18" wheels which are better suited for 4WD terrain because they are fitted with a taller tyre that gives you a more subtle ride over rough surfaces and there are many more choices of All Terrain (AT) and Mud Terrain (MT) tyres on the market. The taller tyres are generally less likely to puncture because the tyre has more flex in the side wall. The Limited and Overland models are fitted with 20" wheels which have a much lower profile and side wall giving a firmer ride and less flex causing the tyres to be more likely to puncture or sustain damage. The very few AT or MT tyres on the market for the 20" wheels.
Some WK2 Limited and Overland owners have ordered there Jeep withe the Off Road Adventure Group option which comes from the factory with the 18" alloys instead of the regular 20" wheels.
So what tyres are available in Australia that will suit our pride and joy when your original tyres are ready for upgrade or you wish to change them for a more suitable for purpose tyre?
You will need to make your own decision as to how aggressive the tyres need to be for your usage and what is the ideal size for your adventures. But you also need to consider that the spare wheel and tyre in the WK2 Grand Cherokee are a smaller size than the road tyres 255/60R18. They are the same diameter but a smaller profile to allow it to fit in the storage compartment. A wider spare is not going to fit in the wheel well but you can increase the height of the tyre to a 265/65R18 but a 275/65R18
will be too large to fit properly.
