Jeep Grand Cherokee 2012 - Is It Trail Ready?

In a blow to Australian buyers who are expecting their new 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee is 'Trail Ready' the boffins at Jeep have made alterations to the front assembly of the 2012 Grand Cherokee and removed the heavy duty recovery hooks that were fitted as standard to Australian 2011 models. As we reported last month this issue is now having an impact as 2012 models start to arrive in Australia.
The removal of these hooks has a much larger impact than Jeep Australia realise.
Their award winning (2011 model) Jeep is really no longer ready for serious 4WD work, unless aftermarket recovery hooks are fitted. Jeep have supplied the 2012 Grand Cherokee with a screw in hook that does not appear to be as strong or safe as the twin 2011 hooks. These type of screw in hooks have proven to be unsuitable for safe recovery of a stricken 4WD in the past. Also the changes that they have made to the front end of the Jeep have rendered the 2011 Recovery/Tow Hooks unsuitable for fitting to the revised 2012 versions that are now arriving in dealer showrooms. The 2011 hooks can not be swapped to the new model as the front end has been changed by Jeep.
The Screw In Mount For 2012 Tow Hook - Is It Safe?
We have been informed the whole front assembly has been changed and the metal rail where the 2011 hooks bolt into has been removed. The 2011 hooks require this mount to securely mount to the vehicle. It also appears that the removal of this cross rail has enabled more foam and plastic infill to be fitted (possibly to meet European requirements).
The effect of this alteration has also impacted the fitting of the Mopar Nudge Bar and the aftermarket ECB Alloy Bull Bar. ECB have discovered their Alloy front bar wont fit a 2012 also and are having to re engineer the mounts.
Dont order hooks from the US as these will only fit a 2011 model.
The hook supplied by Jeep is a screw in tie down hook - but until Jeep prove otherwise, this hook is NOT SUITABLE for any serious recovery and is a shipping tie down only. There is no way this hook should be used for anything other than a light tow. It should not be used for use in a snatch strap or winch recovery.
A lot of people who have ordered the new Jeep and have been waiting for many months for delivery, are expecting their new Jeep to be ready for bush driving, having already seen the 2011 fitted with twin heavy duty recovery hooks at the time of making their purchase decision and ordering their vehicle, they will be very dissapointed to find their new Jeep no longer has them.
Now if they get stuck in a mud hole or on a sandy beach there is no heavy duty, safe and secure recovery hook to recover the vehicle safely.
Imagine one of those screw in hooks breaking loose in a recovery and flying through the air at a great speed, it could injure or even kill a person.
The 2012 mount holes are still in the chassis rail so it is feasable that a recovery hook can be manufactured after market.

Last Dodge Nitro Rolls Off Toledo Assembly Line

The last Dodge Nitro has been produced in the US. The final Nitro's were built last Friday at the Jeep Toledo Assembly Plant where the Nitro shared platforms and many components with the Jeep Cherokee (Liberty in US). After initial sales success in the US and Australia the Nitro has suffered from erratic sales and marketing since the GFC. The Nitro was exported to Australia in 2007 where it sold well initially but it was not as popular in other markets and export production was limited.

Final Australian production vehicles are now being shipped and once these are sold there are no more. The positive outcome for Jeep is that the extra production time can now be utilised for production of more Jeeps.

Jeep In The SAS During World War Two

Not much is heard of the SAS Jeeps and there successful exploits against the Germans in WW2.
These were highly modified Jeeps that were deployed behind enemy lines attacking enemy airfields and destroying planes on the ground. The vehicles were obtained by the British Army through the Lend-Lease Scheme and were suitably modified for SAS use.

"Their first successful raid was on 17th November 1941, when two groups destroyed 61 aircraft at two airfields. Another raid was launched soon after; this time twenty seven were destroyed. By July 1942 the regiment had 15 specially modified jeeps in action in North Africa.
The jeeps were stripped of all non-essential parts including the windscreen, most of the radiator grille bars and even sometimes the front bumper to increase the effective load carrying capacity of the vehicle. Thus the large amount of fuel and water needed for fast long-range raids could be carried avoiding the need for slower support vehicles. A water condensing unit was fitted to the front to reduce loss from the radiator which would otherwise have had to be topped up from the limited drinking water supplies. The jeeps also carried sand mats, metal wheel channels, radio equipment and large quantities of ammunition.
The jeeps were heavily armed with combinations of both Browning and Vickers K machine guns. The ex-aircraft Vickers weapons were generally mounted in pairs and a total of up to five machine guns were carried on some vehicles. The effectiveness of this armament firing a mix of ball, armour-piercing and tracer shells can be judged from one assault on an airfield where 12 aircraft were destroyed in a five minute raid. With all guns blazing a single SAS jeep could deliver an impressive 5000 rounds per minute! The net result was that over 400 aircraft had been destroyed on the ground by November 1942."

Euro NCAP Test Of 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee

The 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee has fallen short of achieving a 5 star Euro NCAP safety rating in the latest round of crash tests. It has been given an overall rating of 4 Stars.
"The Jeep Grand Cherokee lost marks because of structural issues with the driver’s seat and substandard child occupant protection. During Euro NCAP’s frontal impact test, the driver’s inboard seat rail almost broke in half and was mainly held together by the steel rod that controls fore-aft seat adjustments. The break resulted in additional forward movement of the dummy, causing the airbag to ‘bottom out’ (when the driver’s head makes contact with the steering wheel through the airbag fabric)."

The latest Grand Cherokee had previously been tested only in the USA by the NHTSA where it had achieved a 5 Star rating based on the 2010 test criteria. For 2011 models onwards the US testing has been made even more difficult to achieve a 5 Star rating and the 2012 Grand Cherokee has also only scored a 4 Star rating.
Starting with 2011 models, NHTSA has introduced tougher tests and rigorous new 5-Star Safety Ratings that provide more information about safety feature performance and crash avoidance technologies. Because of the more stringent tests, 2011-newer model ratings are not comparable to 1990–2010 vehicles.
The 2010 Jeep had also been awarded 'Top Safety Pick" by the NHTSA.

Euro Testing Vs USA Testing
The main differences between Euro Testing and US testing is that the Euro frontal test is off set which means the car impacts with a barrier that strikes only one side of the vehicle (drivers). The US testing is full frontal into a barrier that spreads the load across the front of the vehicle and the whole structure is stressed arguably giving a more realistic test. The US tests also includes roll over testing as well as ESC and side impact. The Americans will say their test is more rigorous and the Europeans will say theirs is best. Europeans also test for pedestrian impact and injury protection. At the end of the day the test results are similar and the rating is also similar so obviously there is room for improvement by Jeep.

Jeep has informed Euro NCAP it is investigating the cause of the seat rail failure and intends to improve the seat track design, but currently has no plans to re-work existing vehicles.
Check Out The Details below and form your own conclusions.
NHTSA 2010 Test 5 STAR
NHTSA 2011/12 Test 4 STAR
Euro NCAP 2012 Test 4 STAR

Australian ANCAP testing is not expected to be completed because the vehicle is tested in the USA and Europe. Right Hand Drive versions have not yet been tested.

Jeep Cherokee (Liberty) Replacement To Be Based On 2WD Platform

Reports from the US are suggesting the next generation Cherokee/Liberty replacement due in 2014 is said to be based on a 2WD platform and will only offer AWD as an option. It will no longer be a trail rated all terrain vehicle like the current KK model but will go "soft" in an attempt to appeal to mainstream SUV/Crossover buyers who normally buy a Rav4 or Xtrail etc. -
Current KK Liberty/Cherokee
Car and Driver Blog sources are saying "consider the next Liberty to be Jeep’s take on the Dodge Journey, even if they don’t actually share anything excepting corporate powertrains.".
Traditional hard core Jeepers may cringe but most are flocking to the hugely successfull 4 door Jeep Wrangler anyway which has become the modern day equivelent of the older XJ Cherokee which finished production 10 years ago.
Previous KJ Liberty/Cherokee
Chrysler has only just announced a huge investment in the Toledo Jeep Plant to produce the new model in larger volume for both US and World markets.

Original XJ Cherokee
Expect to see the next generation Jeep Cherokee/Liberty replacement reach Australian shores towards the end of 2014.

NO RECOVERY HOOKS FOR 2012 GRAND CHEROKEE

Your new 2012 Grand Cherokee CAN NOT BE RECOVERED if you get stuck in the mud.

The 2012 Grand Cherokee models are starting to arrive at Australian Dealerships and the only visible change in specification is that they no longer have the heavy duty recovery hooks that the 2011 models came with.
Our sources tell us this is due to the requirement in Europe to comply with pedestrian impact regulations!
They do come with the screw in tie down hook which is NOT suitable for any recovery.
There is nowhere to connect a snatch strap or winch cable - at all!

So if you are going into four wheel drive terrain in your 2012 Grand Cherokee you better make sure you have some recovery hooks fitted before you go. The 2011 hooks will fit straight on and could easily be fitted by your dealer so make the dealer fit them as part of the deal before you take delivery.
Update - HOW MUCH WILL THEY COST?
Your local dealer will quote around $900 plus fitting! Yes that is a rip off!
So get online and go to Just For Jeeps .Com HERE and you can get them delivered to your door for around $275.

WK Grand Cherokee Bull Bar Released by ECB

The first full Bull Bar for the new 2011/12 WK2 Grand Cherokee has been released by ECB in Queensland. It is an Alloy Bar so is not set up for winch mounting but the recovery hooks have been included in the two front lower recess areas.
"The ECB Big Tube™ Bar designed exclusively for the Jeep Grand Cherokee. Manufactured from high tensile, structural grade alloys and featuring fully gusseted 63mm headlight tubes, the Big Tube™ Bar provides full  frontal protection for the passengers, headlights, bumper and mechanics. The tapered one-piece bumper incorporates a full width, braced Lower Protection Skirt to provide ideal protection for the delicate cooling equipment. This design creates an extremely strong, tight and good looking fit for the bar, and also allows for the parking sensors to be fully integrated into the  Big Tube ™ Bar. This ensures Grand Cherokees  fitted with parking sensors can still utilise these wonderful tools. For non parking sensor vehicles, capping pieces are provided to maintain the aesthetics of the  Big Tube™ Bar."

"Another BIG feature of this ECB Big Tube™ Bar is the addition of a 3mm Bash Plate. This plate is developed with a very high level of protection in mind, protecting the Jeeps vital under-body equipment of any thing that gets in its way (picture bottom of page). As seen in the picture the plate contours to the existing approach angle and shows a well designed engineered piece of equipment for your Jeep Grand Cherokee."

Jeep Australia Considering Importing Luxury Wrangler

Jeep Australia are considering importing an Australian version of the Luxury Wrangler Sahara. The word is it may have Leather, Body Colour Roof and Flairs as well as 18" Wheels. They wont be able to call it a Sahara as Toyota already use it so another name is being considered. The 2012 Wrangler with the new Pentastar 3.6L V6 will be arriving early 2012. The Luxury model will come later once the go buttons are pushed.

Jeep are introducing quite a few upgrades to models next year with 2 Wheel drive versions of Patriot, Compass and Cherokee already confirmed. There is also a possibility they will return a diesel variant to the Compass range. Those buyers who like the Wrangler 2 Door with a Diesel will have to order it especially as Jeep wont be bringing any of these in the future. Apparently not enough get sold to make it worth while.

Jeep Grand Cherokee Leads Australian Sales Record

Chrysler Australia are reporting a huge 3rd quarter result for 2011 and the Jeep Grand Cherokee is the star of the show leading its segment in the Luxury SUV market by a large margin in September with 445 units sold. Sales of Jeep, Chrysler and Dodge vehicles doubled in September when compared with 2010 (1435 units vs. 710) and YTD sales are up a sizeable 30 per cent.
The new Jeep has been boosted with the recent arrival of the Turbo Diesel variants but stocks are sold out until early next year for some variants. The top specification Overland model is being quoted by dealers for March and April delivery if ordered now. The new Diesel has been getting great reviews from the media. Even the "anti-Jeep" biased media are finding it difficult to criticise the new Jeep. Some even make statements like "I find it hard to accept such a quality car can come from Jeep". -The Age. Others seem to make comments that give the impression that they did not even drive the car, it makes you wonder if Motoring Journalists are as impartial as they make themselves out to be.

Australian Release Of 2012 Jeep Models Delayed UPDATED

Chrysler Australia has told dealers not to expect to see any 2012 models released for sale to the public until early 2012. The models effected are the 2012 Jeep Wrangler with the new Pentastar V6, the 2WD version of the Jeep Patriot, the relaunched Jeep Compass as well as the 2012 Dodge Journey which also gets the Pentastar V6.
Sources say that Chrysler is holding back supplies until current stocks of these models are sold especially the 2011 Wrangler and Journey. Chrysler Australia apparently have heaps of 2011 petrol wranglers powered by the ancient 3.8L V6 and this is reflected in some of the dealer specials that are around, 2 door Wrangler Sport with renegade Pack are being flogged on the internet for as low as $33990 Drive away. Dealers don't want any of the 2011 vehicles in stock when the Pentastar equipped models are launched so it is a great time to pick up a bargain on the run out models.
The 2012 Wranglers will all come with Connectivity Group (Bluetooth and EVIC) and Side Air Bags and WILL HAVE DUAL TOP ROOF after all.
The new Pentastar V6 equipped Wrangler has had great reviews in the USA and is expected to further increase demand in Australia for the petrol model with more grunt and huge improvements in efficiency and fuel range.

NHTSA Opens US Investigation Into KJ Liberty/Cherokee Air Bags

The US Safety Agency the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has opened a ODI investigation after receiving seven consumer complaints on model year 2002-2003 Jeep Liberty (Cherokee) vehicles including four owners alleging that the driver frontal air bag deployed without a crash and three owners alleging that both the driver and passenger frontal air bags suddenly deployed without a crash.
Five of the seven complaints alleged an injury incident totaling five injuries. Six of the seven owners stated that their vehicle was being operated on a residential roadway with three alleging that they were travelling on a highway at speeds of 45 mph or greater when the air bag(s) deployed. Some owners noted that the air bag light had been illuminated, or had intermittently illuminated prior to the deployment. In addition, ODI has received 32 early warning field reports involving 10 injury incidents totaling 10 injuries. The field reports indicated that inspections of the vehicles did not reveal any evidence of exterior vehicle impacts or damage that could have reasonably caused the air bags to deploy. A preliminary evaluation has been opened to investigate the alleged defect. The investigation number is PE11035.
It is not known if any Australian delivered vehicles will be effected and the NHTSA has not yet issued a recall as it is still a preliminary investigation. The Jeep KJ Liberty is sold outside North America as the KJ Cherokee. Chrysler Australia would issue any recall notice if required once the investigation is completed in the US.

Word on the streets is that Chrysler Australia are ramping up their current sales success with the new Jeep Grand Cherokee, 2011 Wrangler and re-priced Dodge Caliber by increasing the number of dealerships in Australia with new dealers already opening in Melbourne.

The Hopper family who currently own Essendon Chrysler Jeep Dodge are re-opening Werribee Chrysler Jeep Dodge at a new location in Point Cook and have also recently purchased Brighton Chrysler Jeep Dodge, their current service centre in North Melbourne will also become a sales outlet moving to a new location possibly in Southbank. Sounds very much like a monopoly doesn't it!
Rumours are also circulating of possible additional dealerships in the eastern suburbs, likely suburbs are Doncaster and Knox. New dealerships are also rumoured for Brisbane and Sydney.

Jeep Wrangler Pick Up Still In The Mix

There is still life in the possibility of a future Wrangler Pickup But......
Automotive News are reporting that the long awaited Wrangler Pickup is still a few years away.
"The wait for a Jeep Wrangler-based pickup truck isn’t quite over: Jeep brand CEO Mike Manley said that while such a vehicle is still a high priority, we won’t see one on the road for at least four years – if at all. Manley told Automotive News that a Jeep pickup wouldn’t be added until the Wrangler is refreshed in 2015 or 2016.
“It is too late in Wrangler’s product cycle to add a pickup. The 2015 or 2016 time frame makes more sense,” Manley told Automotive News. Manley also added that no final decision has been made to produce the Jeep truck.
Recently, Jeep has teased enthusiasts with a slew of concept vehicles like the Gladiator and Wrangler JT, as well as the JK-8 conversion kit. The $5499 JK-8 kit allows owners of a Jeep Wrangler Unlimited to convert the four-door SUV into a pickup truck with just a sawzall and angle-grinder.
The company knows that demand for a Jeep pickup is high; the JK-8 kit has already sold about 300 copies. And the compact Jeep-based pickup could be sold in southeast Asia and Europe, helping bolster Chrysler’s bottom line in those international markets where demand for small pickups is strong.
When the refreshed Jeep Wrangler debuts in 2015 or 2016, it seems quite likely that a pickup variant will be launched. Manley, however, says that no concrete decision on such a vehicle has yet been made.
“I am working closely with the product team because I think a pickup would be a great addition and a natural extension of the product line,” Manley told AN."

NSW Vehicle Modification Laws VSI 50 and VSB 14 - What's Wrong, and Why?

Leading 4WD Journalist and Author Robert Pepper has published an informative article on the proposed VS150 on his blog. Check out the full article on the link below.
"So what is VSI50 and why should you, the recreational offroader, care?
VSIs, or Vehicle Standards Information, are official documents describing what you can or cannot do with vehicles. Clearly, there has to be some limit on modifications otherwise entirely unsafe vehicles would be driving up accident rates.
The NSW RTA’s VSI50 covering the raising and lowering of vehicles, and as offroaders, we’re more concerned about raising than lowering. The industry uses the term “lift” instead of raise, and generally a lift through suspension or body, so I’ll use the term “lift” instead. But for the purposes of VSI 50 a lift also means increasing tyre diameter."
Roberts article makes a heap of sense and takes out some of the 'hype and emotion' from the reporting.
"Some people are asking what's driven this change. Is it a result of a study showing that modified vehicles have a disproportionate effect on the road toll?  The answer to that is no.  It is not clear what the thinking is behind this, and one could well argue that if a lower road toll is the objective the effort for VSI50 could be better directed elsewhere.
There are no studies, to my knowledge, of the effects of modified vehicles on road safety, just anecdotal evidence and guesswork.  I don't think statistics from accidents are collated and analysed."

4 WHEEL DRIVERS CALLED TO ACTION! NSW VS150 MODIFICATION RULES TO CHANGE AGAIN!

Australia's leading 4WD magazine, 4 Wheel Drive Action, have published the following article about proposed new laws in NSW that will effect all owners of modified 4 Wheel Drive Vehicles in Australia. Once one state goes down this path the others will follow. Please pass this message on to all your 4WD freinds as a matter of urgency.

"Australian 4WDers,
We are contacting you today as a matter of urgency, this one is extremely important and will ultimately affect every single 4WDer in Australia.
VSI50 anti-modification laws are back on the RTA’s agenda in NSW. You’ll no doubt remember when the previous version of this document surfaced – known as the ‘hoon laws’. It unfairly and drastically limited the types of suspension and tyre modifications we could make back then, and it’s even worse now.
Make no mistakes about it – this document threatens 4WDing as we know it. This isn’t sensationalism, this is pure fact.
There are two areas where the revised VSI50 severely impacts on every single 4WDer’s ability to modify their vehicle.
The biggest issue is that of vehicle ride height. Under VSI50, vehicles with a combined ride height more than 75mm above standard will only be eligible for ‘conditional registration’. The document isn’t clear on what this means, but you can be certain conditional registration will force you to justify why you ‘need’ to be driving your 4WD every single time you get behind the wheel. There is a way around this – VSI50 states that if you are a member of an affiliated 4WD club, and have completed a driver training course, then you’ll be allowed full registration.
I thought compulsory unionism was dead in Australia. I thought this was a free country.
What we’re witnessing is un-reasonable and un-Australian.
VSI50 forces you to pay membership fees and join a 4WD club, simply so you can have full registration on your sensibly modified 4WD. What if you don’t want to be a member of a club? What if you can’t find a club to join? What if you’re stretched enough as it is and don’t want to pay anymore bills?
If VSI50 becomes official legislation, 4WD NSW & ACT will have ultimate say over when and where you can drive your 4WD!
The second issue of concern with the revised VSI50 document, is a blanket ban of all tyre diameter increases of more than 50mm. That means than generally speaking, anything larger than a 31in tyre on a dual-cab ute, or a 33in tyre on a full-sized wagon, will be absolutely illegal.
There’ll be no option to ever have a bigger set of tyres put through engineering tests to be deemed safe. VSB14, which is the guideline document VSI50 has been created from talks about a maximum headlight lift of 150mm over standard. We believe that’s fair – what we don’t support is the fact that the proposed VSI50 plan limits the way in which you’re allowed to achieve that 6in headlight height raise. Sure, a lot of us will be happy with a vehicle running a 2in lift and 2in over standard diameter tyres, but what if you did want to take it to the next level and run 35in tyres?
If you wanted to spend the time and money on brake and suspension upgrades to ensure your 4WD could run 35in tyre safely - why should you be denied that?
So what can you do to stop this?
We are going to need as many numbers as we can to fight this battle against the RTA. Even if you don’t live in NSW you still have to get behind this and stop these ridiculous rules come into play. Because guaranteed these rules and restrictions that severely limit how we can modify our 4WDs will filter into every state and territory.
We need to be able to communicate with and rally every 4WDer in Australia to fight this battle to protect our rights.
Please pass this message on to as many people as you can"

High Country Festival Next Summer

Annual Festival In The Victorian High Country
The Mountain Cattlemens association Of Victoria are holding their annual Festival at Merrijig near Mansfield on the 13th - 15th January 2012. Want to do something different next summer? Head for the Victorian High Country and experience some of the legendary Mountain Cattlemen culture. Come and experience a great weekend with live entertainment, cattlemen's cup, full catering, hot showers, whip cracking competition, 3 days and 3 nights of entertainment, music and fun for all.

The Mountain Cattlemen’s Association of Victoria (MCAV) represents a hardy group of people whose families and predecessors have grazed their cattle and maintained the Victorian High Country dating back to 1834.  From Australian settlement to the present, caring for their cattle and custodianship of the land has been a cross generational family undertaking, so their training in the mountains is a lifetime experience.  Consequently, the cattlemen are known for their love and knowledge of the bush, for independent action but with the ability to co-operate.  They are persistent.  They have a profound interest in the past.  They respect their elders because of past lessons learned.  As the cattlemen went about their difficult business, a unique Australian culture and heritage was gradually developed without them even knowing!
